The IPL 2021 is Postponed due to COVID-19, Says BCCI

“The Indian Premier League Governing Council (IPL GC) and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in an emergency meeting has unanimously decided to postpone IPL 2021 season with immediate effect” says Vice-President of BCCI Rajeev Shukla.

With COVID-19 cases found in some franchise players and supports staffs involved in the tournament, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to take this bold step of suspending the VIVO IPL 2021. IPL 2021 was postponed earlier on Monday as Kolkata Knight Riders some players tested Covid-19 Positive before the match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore in Ahmedabad. Indian Young Pacer Sandeep Warrier and Mystery Spinner Varun Chakravarthy were found to be positive.

Both the players have isolated themselves from the rest of the squad. After KKR, Later in the day news come from CSK Camp that their three members also tested positive. Three members of the Chennai Super Kings’ IPL contingent – chief executive Kasi Viswanathan, bowling coach Laksmipathi Balaji, and a bus cleaner – have tested positive for Covid-19. After the bio-bubbles of Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings, Covid has now hit the Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals camps. Sunrisers Hyderabad’s wicket-keeper batsman Wriddhiman Saha and Delhi Capitals spinner Amit Mishra have tested positive for COVID-19.

September window to have IPL organised later

Meanwhile, even though the BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla has said that the board will consider rescheduling the remainder of the tournament, there is a very little window in the cricketing calendar that can be used for the same. This suggests that even though IPL 2021 is currently only suspended and not canceled, the chances of it resuming look bleak in a year that has a packed international cricket schedule.

“A September window is being considered. By then the England-India series would be over and the foreign player would be ready for the T20 World Cup. That small window is being explored,a franchise official was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
